Introduction to Research Projects
Initial proposals presented to the Ministry from the university on behalf of the centre’s establishment team include:
1. Development and Implementation of Computer Software for the Teaching and Training of the Recitations of the Holy Quran using the Seven Recitation Methods of Al-Chatebei
The use of computers in education and training is very important, and in particular following the significant developments in computational speeds and storage capabilities and the widespread use of telecommunications and the Internet. Such advancements in computation and telecommunications provide the foundations in the establishment of open universities certifications in many educational programs and electronic distance education. It is a blessing of Allah upon the people that He has enabled the Muslims to contribute in the harnessing of information technology, with particular relevance to the use of computers in the service of the Holy Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet in various ways, both at the hardware and software level.
This project is intended to teach recitation of the Holy Quran in seven ways, known as Al-Chatibiah’s seven methods for reciting the Holy Quran. An application that combines the seven recitation methods of the Holy Quran has been designed and applied to the first quarter of 30th Juz. The key objective of the application is to combine audio recitation with statements explaining the general principles for each of the Imams, narrators and specific words which contain differences in recitation, in addition to the evidences from Al-Shatibiah’s.
The program also recites each of the fourteen narrators of the seven Imams (Kalon - Warsh – Albzi – Konbol –Al-Doree - Al-Sousi - Hisham - Iben Zkoan – Shoaba - Hafs – Khalaf - Khallad – Abou-alharth - Doree Al-Kesaiee). The research has focused on the application of the idea of the program on the first quarter of the 30th Juz. However, it was designed as a long-term view so that it can accommodate the work of all the seven recitation methods of the Holy Quran, subject to the availability of time and the necessary resources/requirements.
The program offers the use of computers and technology in the service of the Holy Quran with the hope that students would benefit from the science of the recitation.
2. Portable Applications for Tafseer and Specialized Topics in the Holy Quran
The significance of the themes/subjects in the Holy Quran in the everyday dealings of Muslims has been proven as crucial and equally applicable in this modern age as was previously evidenced in the ages of the past. Therefore, the urgency of this matter necessitates the requirement for a highly-accessible and user-friendly tool which can present such themes and teachings from the Holy Quran and supporting books of interpretation (Tafseer) of the Quran.
In essence, the tool will require the development of a comprehensive program that facilitates and simplifies research of Quranic themes and teachings using keywords of specialized topics in the Quran. The proposed tool would include a glossary of specialized topics in the Quran and will retrieve the Quranic verses on the subject and corresponding interpretation and would be executed on devices in a fixed or mobile environment that includes: home-PCs, mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and laptops, in addition to other mobile and ubiquitous computing devices. In particular, specialized topics from the Quran, obtained from books of Quranic Tafseer and sciences, would be stored electronically within a database, permitting the user's selection of a specified topic(s) of interest in order to retrieve the corresponding Tafseer/interpretation of the specific verses of relevance.
Furthermore, it is arguable that the need for such a tool is more prevalent outside the Arab-world as evidenced by the vast majority non-Arab Muslims. Consequently, the future plan for an extension of the tool would involve the development of a tool equipped for use by English-speaking users in addition to the former Arabic version proposed, therefore broadening its appeal to a much wider user-community.
3. Quran Virtual Learning Campus
The main objectives of this research program is to develop a Virtual Learning Environment dedicated to Quran and its Sciences based on the latest learning technologies available nowadays. Due to the uniqueness of Quran and its related Sciences, a new virtual learning platform is proposed to standardize the use of Quran resources over the web.
The proposed research will cover different aspects in learning Technologies and efficiently adapt the use of Quran Sciences resources by providing dedicated virtual learning systems that include a dedicated Quran LMS, a central repository for Quran Learning Objects, a deployment engine tool for Quran learning objects, streaming Quran resources, a dedicated Quran related sciences search engine, and an authoring tool for building generative learning objects of Quran and its sciences with dedicated metadata construct for efficient and accurate search.
In order to achieve the above goals, a full Virtual Data Center infrastructure needs to be built that hosts the different systems and applications. The latter includes a standard core Quran Learning Management, Central Repository, and Video Streaming Systems.
